The Language of Numbers : Ramadan's Production

  • There are 150 TV series produced in Egypt this Ramadan 2010 season. These 150 TV series are produced by not less than LE 750 million.
  • There are 70 TV shows aired this Ramadan mostly from talk shows  on Egyptian Channels.
  • These shows are also produced by  LE 50 millions despite the fact their guests are almost the same like "Samir Zaher, Shobeir, Mortada Mansour, Haifa Wahbi,..etc" not to mention their ideas are repetitive "a controversial star hosted to be asked the same questions for example the feud between Zaher and Shobeir and Haifa's marriage..etc"
  • These numbers are only related to Egyptian TV channels , not the Arab TV channels taking in consideration the Arab TV channels have not produced such amount of TV shows or TV series.
  • This is besides of course the TV advertising campaigns , we are speaking about multi-million campaigns. There is strong forecast for advertising this Ramadan in Arab countries , multiply this forecast by 2 in Egypt , the biggest viewership and consumer market in the region and the fact that we surpassed Dubai in advertising in the past 6 months "it is enough to see the new ad campaign of Etisalat to predict how much the 3rd mobile operator spent for one month1"

All this made Ramadan 2010 season TV production the highest in history whether from cost or from quantity.

Ramadan is originally a month of religious devotion not for TV entertainment and showbiz devotion , Ramadan does not tell us to sit on couches and watch TV shows and series for God sake , Ramadan does not tell us to become lazy but rather productive despite the hunger and thirst and productivity here is not related to TV series for sure.No wonder that our productivity declines because we get headaches from TV rounds added to it our addiction to caffeine , seriously why you are amazed that people are sleepy in their work in Egypt during Ramadan !!

Back to the above shocking numbers , if we are speaking about business , I think despite being the prime time of TV in Egypt people can get bored of this TV shows diarrhea , it was like a headache on the first day of Ramadan.

I do not know what to say except that TV production in Ramadan should be included in Egypt's services GDP !!

Notes
1. I do not like this campaign with all the stars in it , first of all there are too stars in it with too many messages about that bloody network , second of all how this is related to Ramadan , it is related to Broadway not to Ramadan I am afraid unlike for the cute Vodafone campaign which nobody likes except me and the wonderful Mobinil campaign of last year which was re-launched starting from yesterday to conquer Etisalat.

  1. This post contradicts with the post on US Aid where you said:

I am speaking about a country full of resources more than you can imagine , I am speaking about brains full of potentials more than you can imagine.Believe me this is not romantic talk , this serious talk.

Doesn't look like that to me...

  2. It does not contradict the post on the contrary :
    1) Tt shows the amount of money this country has got and misused , imagine those LE 750 million invested in something more useful ,more productive
    2) Even from media perspective , take those LE 50 million of repetitive shallow TV shows , you can spend on 12 months producing educational and cultural TV shows that can educate the Egyptian people
These are wasted resources that should be used in the right way.
It is like stealing lands on the banks of the Nile to build bunch of Palaces to rich people in the Gulf killing the environment and at the same time killing the opportunity to grow wheat to feed people or even cotton to restore your white gold

  3. Agreed. Plus, Ramadan isn't time to waste all these lots of money in a useless business. Business that doesn't have any benefit on people's life. People are poor, hungry, homeless, uneducated. They need money to satisfy their survival needs not for cheap useless entertainment.

  4. I hope that these TV people have some place for the beautiful Truth this holy month of Ramadan to say that 911 was and inside job, just like Russian and Iran TV have repeatedly said.

For this issue, in case some of your readers are still living in the stone age of ignorance, I suggest they see for example Architects and Engineers of 911 Truth: http://www.ae911truth.org/

    Happy Ramadan everyone

  6. Well, money wise its good for the business. Believe me I have been looking for figures related to the cultural industries in Egypt and its been difficult. If you have any credible sources please pass them on.

Now, what I see as a problem is that we as in the Egyptians are the ones ultimately paying for all this. There are no figures to show how much money was made selling these productions to other countries. If any thing our TV productions arent selling to others as they used to be. The reason for that in my opinion is because the wrong attitude was adopted to deal with competition from other production outputs, mainly Syrian. While we can all see the improved quality of the picture, most of the story telling isnt that strong, there is a clear issue with the quality of writing and preferring to stretch out the story over 30 days than have a strong story told over 15 days. Also, instead of producing 150 series and to only have a handful that are watchable, not even of excellent quality, they need to focus on producing fewer but stronger shows. We all still remember Layali El Helmeyia, El Wessyia, ect for a reason. Less should be more in this case.
As for the ads, I liked the Etisalat one bec of its message and bec it had Mounir, the rest are BORING and shows real lack of creativity. I was also waiting to see if you will comment on the filthy promos of Al Qahera Wal Nas Station. The main promo about Al Qahera sounds like someone gathered some words and decided to lump them up in one sentence that doesnt actually make sense. The mini promos are full of inappropriate innuendos and I cant believe how every thing goes this Ramadan.
