Miss USA 2010 : Rima Fakih

Miss USA 2010 Rima Fakih
There is no doubt that when that 5 years old Shiite Lebanese girl came with her parents as immigrants to the new world , she did not know or think for a moment that she would be crowned as Miss USA 2010 , the very special Miss USA 2010 among all the previous queen pageants.
I know that a Shiite Muslim Lebanese girl was running for the Miss USA pageant  from the Israeli and neoconservative right wing American blogs which found it too much for Rima to run for the title simply because she is a Muslim , a Shiite like Hezbollah and of an Arab origin but it did not occur to my mind that she would win and becomes the first Muslim Arab girl to hold the title.

Miss Michigan then Rima Fakih
I do not know if this is the result of the Obama effect or Arizona law effect but due to the fact that in 2002 after the 9/11 incident we got Azra Akin as Miss World and Hammasa Kohistani as Miss England after the 7/7. Also we should remember former Miss California and Miss USA Carrie Prejean’s controversy of last year. I am expecting a lot of controversy and media following Fakih and already TMZ has decided to give her a little bit of their royal treatment and comments in news and blogs are full of racist negative remarks about her origin and religion. “I can’t wait to see the reaction of Fox and Friends !!”
It does not surprise me that an Arab girl or even a Muslim girl participates in a beauty pageant contest , as any community and society we got different views and different faces like any society in this world.
Of course I do not put much hope on a girl that depends on her external beauty and fabulous body to change a bloody stereotype about the Arab and Muslim community yet regardless of whether Rima Fakih is a silly shallow girl who dances on a pole and wishes for a world peace or not , this young girl has become another Arab American Muslim icon , of course her actions now will put her either of in the James Zogby and Ahmed Zowail category or in the Nadia Suleman category !!
Back in Lebanon there seems to be a new fascination by the daughter of the South regardless of what the country suffers from, here are couple of photos for her sister Rana and her uncle Rafik in South Lebanon

  2. Why do you have to be such a damn hater? What does it get for you? Does it make you more popular in Egypt or something? If you hate America so much you can't even stand to see an Arab American win Miss USA without launching a full on rant about the US then DON'T WATCH OUR BEAUTY PAGEANTS. It's that simple. I'm effing sick and tired of loading this blog and seeing YOU who claims to be an Egyptian reformist or whatever spending 90% of your blog time on trashing the US. Don't you have anything to say about EGYPT!? Her's an idea! Read this girls blog:

    http://blackincairo.blogspot.com/

See that stuff she's talking about? That's what YOU should be talking about.

  3. I am from the middle east and married to an american for many years. We both consider this display of flesh to be demeaning to women and their honour.

  5. @programmer craig, Why do you have to be such a damn hater to Zeinobia's opinion and freedom of speech. Didn't they teach you in school that freedom of speech is part of the first amendment to the United States constitution? If they didn't, I suggest that you go back and learn more about your constitution.
It is not enough to accuse someone of being hateful without pointing out to the part of their speech that gave you that impression.
It is true that Arab and Muslim stereotypes are still well and alive in a lot of the American media. Can you deny that?
Hey if you don't like Zeinobia's blog DON'T READ IT.

@Zeinobia, Congratulations for the new makeover and thank you for removing the judicial sash off your blog's search box.

  6. Sadly, the american media, started showing photos of her about her "stripping past".

  7. You have it backwards: the conservative media loves to show that American is the land of opportunity, not the bigoted country you claim. By the way, the Obama effect is long over and the country is normal (conservative) again, thank God.

  8. @Hazem

Why do you have to be such a damn hater to Zeinobia's opinion and freedom of speech.

She relentlessly attacks my country and my people. Am I supposed to like it? Am I supposed to be silent? Is that what you would do, if you ran into an American blogger who claimed to be interested in American domestic politics but constantly made hostile and bigoted posts about Arabs and the middle-east?

Didn't they teach you in school that freedom of speech is part of the first amendment to the United States constitution?

And does the US Constitution grant freedom of speech to foreigners only, and not to Americans? Right here in this post Zenobia is making bigoted claims about Americans while at the same time she is predicting American bigotry against Miss USA. The level of hypocrisy is mind-boggling.

If they didn't, I suggest that you go back and learn more about your constitution.

I suggest you look up "Freedom of Expression" in the dictionary. It doesn't mean what you think it means.

It is not enough to accuse someone of being hateful without pointing out to the part of their speech that gave you that impression.

Look at her posts. 90% of them are ranting about the US and about Americans. If you don't see it, pointing it out to you wouldn't do any good. You still wouldn't see it.

It is true that Arab and Muslim stereotypes are still well and alive in a lot of the American media. Can you deny that?

So what? What does that have to do with Egypt? Shouldn't Zenobia be talking about Egypt's problems? Or does Zenobia feel that Egypt's only problem is America? Oh, I know! It's America AND Israel that are the problem, right? If not for us then Egypt would be a utopia!

Hey if you don't like Zeinobia's blog DON'T READ IT.

Somebody has to point out all the manure on this blog. Her anti-US crusade wouldn't be much fun if there weren't any Americans to argue with her, would it? Personally, I find this blog extremely low brow. Zenobia is obviously trying to capitalize on anti-American sentiment in Egypt in order to promote her candidate of choice: ElBaradei. What would you think of an American politician who tried to get elected by preaching hate for Arabs or Muslims, and didn't really have much else to offer?

  10. @programmer craig, "She relentlessly attacks my country and my people. Am I supposed to like it? Am I supposed to be silent?"

Sorry which people are you talking about here? since I am also an American and I have never felt that Zeinobia is attacking me. Oh wait my name is not John or michael, its Hazem and probably I have an accent too. So I don't think you consider me as "your people" here.

"Is that what you would do, if you ran into an American blogger who claimed to be interested in American domestic politics but constantly made hostile and bigoted posts about Arabs and the middle-east?"

Really!! you have got to be kidding me man. What about Debbie Schlussel, Michelle Malkin,Ann Coulter, and the list goes on and on. Didn't they talk about American politics and trash Arabs and Muslims. Oh now I know who you meant when you said "my people".

"And does the US Constitution grant freedom of speech to foreigners only, and not to Americans? Right here in this post Zenobia is making bigoted claims about Americans while at the same time she is predicting American bigotry against Miss USA. The level of hypocrisy is mind-boggling".

No Sir, you are missing the point, Zeinobia did not ask you to stop watching Arabic and Islamic media, you were the one who asked her not to watch YOUR shows simply because YOU ARE INTOLERANT OF HER OPINION. Who is the bigot and hypocrite here?

"I suggest you look up "Freedom of Expression" in the dictionary. It doesn't mean what you think it means"

Maybe it means what I think it means but you don't think it means what I think it means. Are we still in Kansas?

"Look at her posts. 90% of them are ranting about the US and about Americans. If you don't see it, pointing it out to you wouldn't do any good. You still wouldn't see it"

Your are wrong, very wrong, It's actually 95% of her posts are about Americans. Give me a break man. Do you really read her blog? Maybe you have a tunnel vision.

"So what? What does that have to do with Egypt? Shouldn't Zenobia be talking about Egypt's problems? Or does Zenobia feel that Egypt's only problem is America? Oh, I know! It's America AND Israel that are the problem, right? If not for us then Egypt would be a utopia!"

Utopia or Dystopia, its not your damn business what Zeinab should or shouldn't write.

"Somebody has to point out all the manure on this blog. Her anti-US crusade wouldn't be much fun if there weren't any Americans to argue with her, would it? Honestly I only see your shit here. Personsally I found her blog to be honest, informative, and written by first class blogger. I have always respected her opinion even though I disagree with her on some issues.

  12. i love your blog zeinobia and follow you on twitter -- you rock girl! and yes i am an egyptian-american muslim, and find the winning of rima fakih very intriguing! it has positives and negatives, let's leave it at that. but on a political side: how ironic is it that miss america -- the one who supposedly represents all of america, is a muslim AND arab, both whom the american media sheds negative light upon? so ironic, i love it!

  13. @Hazem,

Oh wait my name is not John or michael, its Hazem and probably I have an accent too. So I don't think you consider me as "your people" here.

Don't play games with me. I've run into a lot of "Americans" who are Americans in passport only and remain quite hostile to their adopted homeland. If you don't feel Zenobia's constant bashing of America and Americans is a problem, then NO. You ARE NOT "my people". No matter what it says on your passport.

Really!! you have got to be kidding me man. What about Debbie Schlussel, Michelle Malkin,Ann Coulter, and the list goes on and on. Didn't they talk about American politics and trash Arabs and Muslims. Oh now I know who you meant when you said "my people".

Excuse me, but weren't you implying that people should be OK with it when a blogger makes bigoted and hateful comments about them? So what is this with all the whining now?

No Sir, you are missing the point, Zeinobia did not ask you to stop watching Arabic and Islamic media, you were the one who asked her not to watch YOUR shows simply because YOU ARE INTOLERANT OF HER OPINION.

You're damn right I am. Her opinion is that her country is a dump because of my country.

Who is the bigot and hypocrite here?

    She is. And you are.

Utopia or Dystopia, its not your damn business what Zeinab should or shouldn't write.

Of course it is. She's agitating for war and revolution, and she's using her grievances against my country to support it.

Honestly I only see your shit here. Personsally I found her blog to be honest, informative, and written by first class blogger. I have always respected her opinion even though I disagree with her on some issues.

Well, I don't respect her opinion. I think she's got some screws loose if she think ElBaradei is going to get elected without the support of the Muslim Brotherhood. And I think she's batshit crazy if she thinks the Muslim Brotherhood would let ElBaradei serve any purpose more than a momentary figurehead. But that's really none of my business. What *is* my business is when she tries to get ElBaradei elected by playing up his anti-American credentials.
